This was for a book cover competition hosted by the Folio Society for Neil Gaiman’s novelette “The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains”.
The brief was fairly open. All I had to do was read the story, and choose a scene to paint, so I chose the part where the dwarf gets his first look at the cave opening and feels largely unimpressed. I painted the scene in Clip Studio Paint. The typography started in CorelDraw, but I finished it off in Photoshop.
Just for fun, my husband made a 3D mockup in Blender, but that wasn’t sent through for the competition.
